WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – A local church in Wilmington continues to serve the homeless population through its lunch bag program, after seeing increased need during the pandemic

The St. Jude Metropolitan Community Church Lunch Bag Program was founded 2 years ago by Tim Corbett.

Rocky Brisson, one of the volunteer organizers of the program, said the program has grown since then, with more and more people seeking his services since the height of the pandemic, saying they are grateful for the opportunity to ” help fight food insecurity among the inhabitants of the region. homeless population.

“Because it could be me on the street, it could be any of us.” Especially during the pandemic, it was a lot of different people. Lots of different people, ”said Rock Brisson, volunteer organizer for MCC St. Jude.

The Metro St. Jude CHURCH’s lunch bag program fuels nearly 100 lunches on Wednesdays AND Saturdays.

Over the past year, from July 2020 to June of this year, the church distributed 8,000 lunch bags to members of Wilmington’s homeless population.

“Because no one else was feeding these people. I mean, it’s the people – we’re trying to get to the people that no one else will go to, ”said Rocky Brisson.

With donations of food and funds to purchase supplies, many volunteers from the program are scouring the city of Wilmington to find members of the homeless community and deliver them a bagged lunch of a sandwich or a hot dog, chips, a cup of fruit, a dessert and a bottle of water.

Brisson said some people who receive the lunches direct them to other people who may also need the program’s help.

“One thing they will do is look out for each other. All the little groups are like a community, and they – they’ll tell us that somebody’s here, somebody’s over there. They sort of direct us to other people, ”said Brisson.

The St. Jude Metropolitan Community Church also has a pantry that has served the community for nearly a decade on Tuesdays. Over the past year, this pantry has distributed over 95,676 pounds of food to over 5,000 families.
