HÀ NỘI — As of December 31, 2020, Việt Nam had 683,600 operational businesses, up 35.3% from 2016, the 2021 economic census revealed.

According to the census, the preliminary results of which were announced by the General Statistics Office (GSO) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, during the period 2016-2020 the number of enterprises increased by 7, 9% each year, which remains below the average of 8.7% recorded between 2011 and 2016.

In 2020, companies employed more than 14.7 million workers, an increase of 4.7% compared to 2016. During the period 2016-2020, the number of workers increased by 1.2%, in down from 5.1% in 2011-2016.

Co-ops have seen a sharp increase in numbers but a notable decline in the workforce, with nearly 15,300 units nationwide in 2020, up 17.5% from 2016, and 169,600 employees, down 15.6%.

In 2020, there were nearly 5.2 million private business and production establishments, up 5.7% from 2016. However, the 1.4% and 0.7% annual increases in number of establishments and workers during the period 2016-2020 were much lower. than increases of 3.0% and 1.8%, respectively, in 2011-2016, and 4.4% and 5.6% in 2006-2011.

The census also found a decrease in the number of non-commercial units and non-governmental organizations. However, religious establishments have maintained their growth both in terms of quantity and numbers.

Nguyễn Trung Tiến, deputy head of G.S.O. and a member of the central economic census steering committee, said the bureau was working to announce the official census results as soon as possible.

Also on January 11, he released the preliminary results of the 2021 administrative census which showed that Việt Nam had 32,300 administrative establishments at the end of 2020, down 7.25% from 2016.

Official results are expected to be released in the second quarter of this year.
