Mr. Rai stated in the census that the castes and tribes specifically notified as scheduled castes and tribes in accordance with the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order 1950 and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 (as amended from time to time). other) are counted.

“The state governments of Maharashtra and Odisha have requested that caste details be collected in the next census. The Indian government has decided as a matter of principle not to enumerate the population by caste other than SC and ST in the census, ”he said in response to a written question.

Responding to another question, Mr Rai said that the government’s intention to conduct the 2021 census was notified in the India Gazette on March 28, 2019, but that due to the outbreak of the COVID- pandemic 19, census activities were postponed.
