Butler County United Way is asking for donations to help the homeless

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) – United Way of Butler County is asking for your help to ensure homeless adults can stay warm this winter.

Now that the holidays are over, the gift-giving season is also over.

But there are still a lot of people who need help at this time of year.

Winter clothing donations are starting to arrive at Butler County United Way in Hamilton.

This month’s Building Block event is a winter clothing drive to benefit Butler County’s homeless adult population.

“I think everyone should want to give because we’re here to help everyone in the community,” says United Way Campaigns and Volunteers Director Amanda Burns. “If we can help a person improve their life, it improves the good of the community.”

United Way asks for new or lightly used, clean winter clothing such as coats, long-sleeved shirts, gloves, hats, scarves and socks.

United Way hopes to collect enough items to make 150 care packages for distribution next month.

“Even though the homeless on the streets may not stay there [at a shelter], they have warming centers where they can go get a coat, even if they’re not going to stay there,” says Burns.

Burns says the services provided by United Way can help people going through a temporary or long-term crisis.

“I like to say, personally, that we’re all one crisis away from needing United Way’s help and support,” says Burns. “You never know when you’ll need Centraide service. So I think when you can donate and give time, you should because if you ever find yourself in a situation like this, someone in the community would love to help you, and that’s where Butler County United Way steps in. ”

Items will be collected until February 11, then distributed the following week.

Volunteers will assemble the care kits and include a personalized note for each person. Even if you can’t donate an item, you can still volunteer to help.

“It’s very rewarding to always help someone in need,” says Burns. “You never know where you might be or a loved one in your family might be at any given time.”
